Facts about the African Painted Dog

az guides

The African painted dogs, also known by the painted wolf, are the last members of the Lycaon genera. They are one of Africa's most persecuted animal species. The unique mottled black, red, and white fur make it an intriguing predator. This wolf-like dog is highly endangered and has been around since thousands of years. Here are some facts about this elusive canine.

Lycaon pictus

Lycaon pictus (African painted dog) is a large, canid canid that only lives in Africa. It is also known to be the Cape hunting dog or the African wilddog, or simply the painted dog. Its name comes from the Greek lycaon (meaning wolf) and the Latin "painted". It is also the only canid that does not have dewclaws on its forelimbs.

Prey

The African painted dogs prey primarily on medium-to large ungulates. Although these prey animals can vary in size and availability depending on the season, the Serengeti wildebeest is the most commonly preyed upon. The African painted dog can also eat large birds and steal prey from lions. The main advantage of the hunter over other predators is its speed.

Behaviour

Individual and collective behavioural patterns can predict the ability of African painted dogs in eliciting aggressive or frustrated behavior. Huffing and sneezing are both vocalizations produced by African painted dogs and are associated with aggression or frustration. Researchers have identified anomalies that are linked to the motivational system of African wilddogs. Huffing or sneezing is similar to signals used in other canid species like the sneeze but they don't come with threatening postures or expressions.

Habitat

The habitats of the African painted dogs are varied. These canines live in large groups, called packs. They communicate with each other by making squeaking sound. They can hunt large mammals of medium and larger size and can kill up to 70%. The dominant breeding pair of these canines only breeds and mates. They help with feeding large litters of pups, and all adults regurgitate food for sick members.

Poaching

The African painted can be found south of Sahara Desert in Africa. But, now, they are gone from 25 of Africa's 39 countries. The once massive packs that contained 100 or more animals are now nearly extinct. Poaching is a major threat to the survival of this species. This species' plight has resulted in the rise of terror and apathy towards them.

Can I bring my dog along?

In most states, dogs cannot be hunted together. However, certain states have laws that permit this practice. To find out if it is permitted in your state, check with the department of natural resources.

Some hunters also bring their pets along. Some hunters believe having a pet helps them relax while hunting. Some believe having a companion makes it less likely that they will get lost.
